Subject: Burn Ban

Effective immediately……..Rankin County is under a Burn Ban until further notice. The NWS Jackson issued a fire watch this morning and stated that conditions are very favorable for rapid and intense fire development…..The NWS is not expecting any significant rainfall for at least the next 10 days. The dry conditions along with gusty winds and low humidity (20-25%) prompted this ban. The exceptions to the ban include the following groups:
  1. Ms. Forestry Commission
  2. Commercial prescribed burners
  3. Commercial developers with heavy equpment onsite and following MDEQ guidelines
  4. County Fire Service
Until the ban is lifted, no one other than the above mentioned, is allowed to burn anything outdoors.

I spoke to 2 of the 4 prescribed burners in the county this morning and they stated that after they finish their jobs today they will not be doing any burning until conditions improve.

If called to a grass / woods fire, take into consideration back-up departments and Forestry Commission early on, especially during weekdays. Remember to give a good scene size-up so dispatch can take appropriate action as well. This message has been sent to all media outlets for public dissemination.

If you respond to a grass / woods fire and the landowner (or whoever started the fire) states they did not know there was a burn ban, advise them your presence is their notification and not to burn anything again until the ban is lifted. If you respond again to the same location or same person, fines may be imposed through Justice Court and they can be responsible for any damages that occur, including damaged equipment or injuries to firefighters.

If you have any questions please give me a call

Tommy
