Storm Destroys Fishing Pier

Fisherman Jim Settlemire will have to find another fishing spot after Thursday's storms demolished his favorite fishing place, the pubic fishing pier at the Rankin County Landing.

Jim and 4 others were on the pier as the storm approached from the north end of the lake.

"We need to get out of here" Settlemire shouted to the others and began helping them get to their cars.  He made a return trip to help an elderly fisherman off the pier.

The vehicles, however, didn't provide enough shelter, they begin rocking as the winds picked up.

"I remembered that the restrooms survived Hurricane Katrina, so we got out of my van and made a run for them", said Settlemire.

He peeked outside a few minutes later to see the piers being torn apart by the waves.

No one was injured but the pier was heavily damaged.  Debris was scattered all along the shoreline around the landing.

Reservoir personnel had removed most of the debris from the water's edge  by late morning and had it piled up awaiting removal.

Greg Burgess, Chief Engineer for the PRVWSD, said the pier would be rebuilt but had no timelines at this time.
