PRVWSD Discusses Flood Insurance Problems With FEMA

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRVWSD) today discussed recent flood insurance program problems with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Many PRVWSD leaseholders have received letters indicating that their homes may now be in a special flood hazard area and that they have to purchase flood insurance. “This comes as a surprise to most homeowners as their homes have not been in a special flood hazard area in the past,” said PRVWSD General Manager, John Sigman.

Some mortgage companies are requiring homeowners to buy flood insurance that, in many instances, can cost thousands of dollars per year.

“We are encouraged by the response from FEMA today,” said Mr. Sigman. He further noted that FEMA would like to see more examples of these letters received by homeowners from mortgage or insurance companies. If you have received such a letter, fax it to the PRVWSD at 601-856-2585.

Mr. Sigman said, “The PRVWSD would like to thank Senator Cochran’s office for setting up today’s discussion and thank Senator Whicker’s and Congressman Harper’s office for participating.”
