Museum to Host 12th Annual
“NatureFEST!”
Saturday, April 14, 2012

Take the Dinosaur Train Nature Trackers Club Challenge, meet Mo the two-toed sloth,Leona the Lion, Cat in the Hat, Smokey Bear and Inky the Clown, try canoeing, and shop for crafts.

Jackson, Miss. – Now in its twelfth year, “NatureFEST!” will get visitors of all ages into the swing of spring on Saturday, April 14, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. “Spend the day in the middle of nature!” invites museum director Libby Hartfield. “Come out to the Museum and enjoy live local music and a beautiful Mississippi day.” There is no fee, other than regular Museum admission, to attend the event and the first 500 visitors will receive $2 off admission. Food vendors include Bop’s Frozen Custard and Backyard Burgers.

“NatureFEST! is a festival, a nature outing, and a fascinating Museum trip, all wrapped into one exciting day,” explains special projects coordinator Megan Fedrick. At “NatureFEST!”, visitors can:

  • Take the Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train Nature Trackers Club Challenge, try canoeing, and explore the far reaches of the Museum's nature trails.
  • Meet Leona the Lion, Cat in the Hat, Smokey Bear, and Inky the Clown.
  • Touch real sea creatures and see live animal shows, like Rob Mies' “BioDiversity Live!”, featuring Mo the two-toed sloth. Participate in live raptor and reptile demonstrations. Watch divers feed the fish in the giant Museum aquariums.
  • Shop for crafts made by the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, visit the Native Plant Sale, and buy a pair of Toms Shoes and have them painted by local artists at the Buffalo Peak Outfitters “Style Your Sole” event.
  • Dig for fossils, explore the “Animal Secrets” exhibit and get their faces painted.
  • Go behind the scenes with Museum scientists and researchers to learn about their unique research tools. Discover how valuable specimens in the Museum Collections are acquired and maintained.
  • Canoe on the Pearl River with John Rusky of the Quapaw Canoe Company.


Museum Hours: M-F: 8am - 5pm; SAT: 9am - 5pm; SUN: 1pm -5pm. Admission: $6 adults; $4 children ages 3-18; $5 senior citizens (60+); free for children under 3; free for Museum Members; school teachers with classes: call for group information. Prices and schedule subject to change.
