Rankin Radar

Numerous radar bills were introduced to the 2012 Mississippi Legislature - all are dead but one.  House Bill 663 would authorize the Rankin County Sheriff's Office to use radar and is currently assigned to the House Local and Private committee.

The text of the bill can be seen here.

Opinions run high when discussing radar, some feel radar would be used for speed traps to generate revenue.  So, we decided to track the money and see where the bucks go when a ticket is written.

The Rankin County Justice Court provided a breakdown of how ticket funds are allocated.  It is a complicated process, the computer printout provided to TRN was 61 pages long.

We'll take a few samples from the numerous ticket types and give you a picture of who gets paid when you pay.

Notes:  Funds allocated to the county go into the county general fund - not to the Sheriff's office.  Funds labeled PRV fines go to the county.   PRVWSD gets no revenue from any tickets written by the Reservoir Patrol.

The numbers assume a guilty plea/verdict in Rankin Justice Court.

There was one charge that was omitted from the above list, the charge that is added to your insurance rates.
