News Release From Rankin County Sheriff's Office

Rankin County Man Dies When Vehicle Crashes into Pond

On Saturday June 23, 2012 at approximately 6:32 a.m. the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a sports utility vehicle in a pond in the 600 block of Seventh Day Road near Florence.

Rankin County Deputies along with Rankin EOC, AMR, Cleary FD and Florence FD, responded to the scene. When first responders arrived, they found a silver Mercury Mountaineer almost completely submerged approximately 30 feet from the bank. A Rankin EOC dive team responded to the scene and began a search of the pond. Approximately one hour into the search divers located a body approximately 50 feet from the vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as Christopher T. Martin, a 22 year old male from Traylor Road, Florence, MS.

It appeared that the vehicle was traveling south on Seventh Day Road and went off the right side where the driver appeared to overcorrect which caused the driver to lose control and end up in the pond on the opposite side of the road. Apparently the driver was ejected from the vehicle when it crashed into the water. The Rankin County Coroner has transported the body to the Mississippi State Crime Lab. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the accident.
