Happy Doughnut Day

Today is National Doughnut Day

In 1938 The Salvation Army selected the first Friday in June as a day of celebration to honor the many women who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War 1.

Doughnut Lassies, as they were called, attempted to lift the spirits of soldiers by serving them doughnuts near the fields of combat.  One lassie said "There was a prayer in my heart that somehow this would do more for those who ate the doughnuts than just to satisfy a physical hunger".

Watch a great video with WW1 footage and Doughnut Lassies in action.
