Hot Chocolate Classic 5K-Updated With Form

Now is the time to show how serious you are about that New Year's Resolution to live a healthier lifestyle.  Demonstrate to your spouse you are not just full of good intentions and pecan pie.  Here is how you can do it while helping the Rankin County School District at the same time.  Register for the Hot Chocolate Classic 5K run/walk.  The event will take place on Saturday, January 26, 2013 (plenty of time to digest that Holiday turkey), at the Rankin Landing parking lot on the Spillway.  It's $20 if you pre-register by January 10, and $25 after.  There is also a 1 mile fun run for the kids, so peel them away from the X Box and get them out there.  It's $15 for pre-registered fun run participants.  You get a shirt, you break a sweat, and you leave with a sense of accomplishment.  You can find the registration form here.

How Hard Core Are You?

The Reservoir YMCA is sponsoring the 2013 Polar Bear Jump.  Apparently, this will entail jumping into the Ross Barnett Reservoir at 11 a.m. on New Year's Day from Lakeshore Park.  You can register for this event at the Reservoir Y.  The Y's website on this event can be found here.  All it says is call Trace at 601.992.9118 for more information.

(Some of) The Law Behind Fireworks Sales

Fireworks stands are popping up around the Reservoir again.  These little noise-making explosions of joy are either loved or hated in the residential areas around the Rez.  Many concerned citizens may be curious as to the law behind fireworks sales in the State of Mississippi.  Here's your tutorial:

Below is a regurgitation of various laws, ordinances, and statutes.

The Future of the East Metro Parkway

The Clarion Ledger recently ran an article about The Blake, a proposed 113 bed assisted-living facility, to be built on the East Metro Parkway behind J. C. Penny's in the Dogwood Mall.  That $16 million facility is expected to open in the Fall of 2013, employ up to 75 people, and provide an upscale residential living facility for the aged and infirm.  See The Blake's webpage here.  The 100,000 square foot facility will itself be significant; however, reading about the future plans for the East Metro Parkway grabbed my attention.  Rankin First Economic Development Authority, through its Executive Director, Tom Troxler, indicated the thrust of the East Metro Parkway will be health care industry related.  With Baptist Health System's facility across the street from The Blake, Rankin County and the City of Flowood already are ahead of the curve.

The Latest Draft of Proposed Rez Community District Ordinances

The latest draft of the proposed Reservoir Community District (previously referred to as the Overlay District) Ordinances are below.  From what I understand, no more significant changes are expected prior to consideration by the Board of Supervisors.  I believe the "sign" portion of these ordinances simply incorporate identical language employed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District.  If so, uniformity is likely a good thing.  Enjoy!

Table 100 and Blair E. Batson

Pursuant to an email I just received from Table 100's listserv, they will be donating 10% of all gift card sales made now through Christmas Eve to the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.  That's a great reason to buy a few stocking stuffers there.

Opening of Thompson Field

The Blue Angels came to Jackson to perform at Thompson Field in 1963.  Here is some Youtube footage of the Blue Angles that day.

Plane Crash Near Fannin-Updated

WAPT is reporting an experimental bi-wing plane crashed just before 5 p.m. near the Woodbridge Subdivision off Three Prong Road. The pilot walked away; the passenger was more seriously injured.  No names have been released yet. See link to wapt story.

Update:  The original WAPT story (and, as a result, my link) incorrectly stated the pilot was unharmed, while the passenger was injured.  It turns out the pilot was injured and removed via ambulance.  The passenger, miraculously, walked away.

I apologize for the misinformation.  Thankfully, neither party were seriously injured.

Some Upcoming Events

Tonight is the Grand Lighting of Christmas lights at Winner's Circle Park.  We've already talked about that enough.  However, I can tell you that your $5 for chili tasting gets you a 12 ounce bowl of chili from three Chili Cookoff participants (you decide which three you want).  You won't go away hungry.

Tomorrow is the City of Flowood Open House.

Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is hosting "Christmas is For the Birds", where you can take your kids (or grandkids) to the Museum and make Christmas ornaments that will feed the birds all winter long.  Extremely informative website here.  Call 601.576.6000 for more info.

Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Jackson Zoo is hosting "Cookies With Santa", where you and your children can enjoy Holiday story time with local author Stephanie Stamps, cookie decorating, Santa visiting, and much more.  Sounds like fun.  Information can be found here.

Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Mississippi Children's Museum is hosting its own Happy Birthday Party, in honor of its second birthday.  Scooby-doo and Santa will be there.  Rut-Roh!  Check out the information provided on the website.  This looks like a lot of fun.

Broadmoor Baptist Church is singing at the Christmas on Ice event in Madison (as previously discussed here).

Nick's Wonderland, in the parking lot of the old Rapid's on the Reservoir, is open seven days a week.  Head out there and buy your Christmas tree.  A portion of your purchase will go to Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.  There is far more information posted on this here, including info on train/sleigh rides, etc.

Plenty to do.

Bradley Lum Formally Announces Candidacy

Jackson Jambalaya published Bradley Lum's campaign's formal announcement here.  The complete text is available after the jump.

The Rez News encourages all other candidates to submit their formal announcements to us for publication as well.

Winter Edition of Gator Tales is Out

"Gator Tales" is the name of the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District's semi-regular, electronic newsletter.  The Fall edition can still be found on the PRV's website, therez.ms.  However, PRV just updated it's Facebook page to indicate the Winter edition is out.  I believe it consists of one page, and provides a dredging report update and an appeal to preregister Reservoir car tags.  Check it out if you do the Facebook.  I will post a link to the Winter edition for all once PRV updates its webpage.

Christmas Open House for City of Flowood

The City of Flowood and the Flowood Chamber of Commerce are hosting a Christmas Open House on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Table 100 Conference Center, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  All are invited.  Free food from Table 100?  Why not!

Christmas in the Park (Updated)

This post updates my earlier post concerning the Grand Lighting of the Christmas lights at Winner's Circle Park in Flowood.  The big event is December 6.  Contestant teams for the Chili Cook Off start setting up at noon; judging takes place at 5 p.m.  The rest of the festivities begin at 5:30 p.m.  According to Winner's Circle Park's Facebook page, Santa will be in attendance to oversee the grand lighting.  There will be a special performance by the Flowood Elementary Choir and the Actors Playhouse & Company.  Further, the train will also be back to shuttle good boys and girls around the park.

Attending the grand lighting is free.  However, you have the option of paying $5 for up to three "samples" of chili.  Drinks will be sold for $1 a piece.

Weather.com is predicting a high of 68 degrees and a low of 55 on Thursday.  So don't bother bringing your sled.

Santa and the train will also be in the Park on the following dates:  December 7, 8, 10-15, 17-21.

Special Election Set

Governor Phil Bryant set January 8 as the date for the special election to fill the vacated District 59 House seat.  Former Representative Kevin McGee resigned in December after having served one year of his second, four year term.  District 59 covers the majority of what is considered the Rankin County side of the Reservoir.  A map of the current lines for District 59 can be found here.  A map of redistricted District 59, to be implemented in 2015 can be found here.  The special election will be pursuant to the current District 59 lines, which includes a portion of Crossgates.
