Children's Fitness Fest

There is no complaining about the weather we've had so far this Summer.  However, the temperature will rise this coming weekend.  Your chance to beat the heat can be found at the Children's Healthcare of Mississippi Fitness Fest.  It's Saturday, July 13, at the Jackson Convention Center, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This website will give you all the details, including a free family pass into the event.  The website describes Fitness Fest as "an interactive event where families can participate in easy, fun activities that will improve their fitness and health choices."

Below is just a sample of what will be happening at the fest:

About FITNESS FEST:
  • Dr. Rick deShazo of Southern Remedy will be addressing children’s health topics and taking questions from parents. Southern Remedy is Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s flagship wellness show dedicated to keeping Mississippians healthy.
  • Some people wear their heart on their sleeve, but we think bigger than that! In the middle of the convention center, you will find a giant walk-through inflatable heart! This heart will feature easy to understand, interactive information for kids and adults on cardiac health. Plus, it’s totally cool to walk inside a human heart!
  • Mississippi’s very own Celebrity Chef Rob Stinson, from television’s “Fit to Eat,” will be at the Fitness Fest providing cooking lessons and easy to follow how-to healthy food demos.
  • Inside the beautiful space, we will have a one-mile walking track for everyone to enjoy. This mile will serve as Mile One of the Mississippi Blues Marathon for Kids on January 11, 2014. This event, in conjunction with the annual Blues Marathon, promotes a healthy walking lifestyle to today’s children. They can sign up right there at the Fitness Fest!
  • Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s “Ed Said” will host three live shows. This high energy show features kid-friendly sing-a-longs and raps on fitness and nutrition. Kids will get moving while they learn. There will be room for 1,000 hopping, dancing kids moving in time to Ed Said’s catchy rhythms. Kids won’t even know they’re learning something healthy.
  • Mississippi artist/illustrator Marshall Ramsey will bring his own special form of humor to the FITNESS FEST. Spark your child’s creative interest with this artistic experience!
  • Come enjoy and explore an interactive kid-sized grocery store, stocked full of produce, pasta, nutritional snacks, and more! Kids can learn hands-on about what makes a food “good” or “bad,” and how to make healthier food choices on their own. Encourage a sense of independence, accomplishment and health with this activity! Plus, introduce your kids to various foods they may not have encountered before. Broccoli, pears, apples, oh my!
  • We will have tons of sports demos, there’s no way your child won’t find something he or she loves to play! Try different sports, from basketball to tennis to soccer with some of the state’s most talented and passionate athletes.
  • It’s not just for kids! Parents will enjoy communicating with and receiving valuable information from various experts on health, fitness and nutrition. We hope to provide you with the resources to improve your entire family’s health, and lives! From weight loss to health screenings, you’ll find an answer to the health dilemmas you’ve been facing.
  • Enjoy live music, comedy, dancing, singing, hula hooping, Zumba, yoga, pilates, sports, games, contests, jump-roping, bicycling and more at a totally cool, fun day of fitness!
