Old Post Concerning Old Fannin Road Expansion

How about this walk down memory lane?  A recent commentor posted on one of Jim's old posts concerning the Old Fannin Road construction.  The original post dated April 16, 2012, can be found here, and it is entitled "Old Fannin Road Update".  The meat of the post, I copy below for your reading enjoyment:
After many delays the project to widen Old Fannin Road is about to take a major step forward.  Last Thursday the Rankin County Board of Supervisors voted to advertise for construction bids.
  • Plans called for the existing road to be widened to 5 lanes and include:
    • 2 traffic lanes and a bike trail northbound
    • 2 traffic lanes and a bike trail southbound
    • A center turn lane
  • Road will be wider than a conventional 5 lane road because of the two 5 foot bike trails.
  • Cost of project to be $11.2 million - $7.8 million in MDOT funds and $3.4 million in Rankin County funds.
  • Project is 2.7 miles long and will run from Spillway Road to the Flowood city limits near the Flowood library.
  • Project completion time estimated to be 20 months.
  • New road will have 5 traffic lights that will be synchronized by radio interconnect to ensure smooth traffic flow.  Traffic light locations:
    • Eagle Drive
    • Bridalwood Dr
    • Farmington Blvd/Vernon Jones
    • Oak Grove Dr.
    • Avalon/River Chase

How about that; less than two year estimated completion date.  When will construction companies ever shoot straight with consumers about estimated completion dates.  Wouldn't it be better if they were honest at the outset and tripled the "perfect conditions" estimate?  That way, everyone would be happy when they finished in three years rather than 5.  I digress. . . .

The comment that triggered this post questioned whether the bike lanes are still included in the current construction.  I've never seen anything indicating they were not.  I assume new lines will be painted once construction is complete, and the bike lanes, similar to what we have on the causeway, will be included.  If anyone knows if this has changed, speak up.

Are we still getting bike trails? it does not look like their is enough room.

There's no way the current width accounts for bike lanes...the bike lanes will have to be within the outside lane. Also, scheduling is an art form that is impossible to practice with politicians changing their minds on exactly what they want midway through construction...of course, contractors love a good change order

Like THAT is a smart thing to do, make allowances for bicycles to travel along side vehicles. What could possibly go wrong with that?
CURRENTLY, there is NO bicycle traffic on Old Fannin Rd. and has been NO incidents to report. 25

There's also no walking pet giraffes on Old Fannin and there have been no giraffe accidents reported either. What's your point?

When it becomes necessary to point out the difference between bicycles and pet giraffes, you may be dealing with someone who has a few pages stuck together in the book of life.

Actually, I have often seen bicycle traffic along Old Fannin, particularly on the weekends. I hope they do still intend on having the bike lanes!
