Rankin County Administrator Resigns

County Administrator, "Hoopy" Stringer resigned effective 5:00 p.m. last Friday (for real, this time).  The Clarion Ledger speculates his resignation is tied to the County's deliberations involving the City of Flowood's proposed convention/ conference center.

The proposed conference center would be located on East Metro Parkway, be connected to an upscale hotel, and wholly located within the city limits of Flowood. I presume envisioning the benefits would boost the entire county, on Friday, the Rankin County Board of Supervisors voted to explore the possibility to fund, in part, the construction of the center.

Would someone please explain to me why Rankin needs another conference center? What's wrong with the one at Hinds in Pearl?

I am not privy to the discussions; however, one benefit of a conference center in Flowood is the ability to serve alcohol at events. I also hear the proposed conference center will tie in directly to an upscale hotel. They are sufficiently different, I don't imagine the Clyde Muse Conference Center will be in direct competition with Flowood's. I'd be nervous, however, if I was the City of Jackson's.

Yeah thanks, but still not sold. KF did a series on conference centers and how they are black holes on cities' balance sheets a few years ago. Has anything changed since then and why would Flowood be any different? The good mayor should enjoy his city's surplus and not flush it down the toilet. Same goes for the county, although their budget is somewhat leaner. Flowood has a unique opportunity to be anything it wants; why yolk its potential to a proven loser? If Rhodes still wants it, then have the developer pay for it. The taxpayers don't need another boondoggle.

Wish Rhodes could influence the RCSD to deal with the extreme issues at NWR HS. No sane parent would have their child attend that school with the endemic problems no one seems to want to talk about.
