This Week at the Rez

Email verbatim below:

·         Eli Manning jersey raffle: Football fans, especially those of the Ole Miss kind, and sports memorabilia enthusiasts will appreciate the latest raffle held by the Barnett Reservoir Foundation: An Eli Manning New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI jersey signed by Manning. Tickets are on sale now for  $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. The drawing will be held Aug. 28th at Kathryn’s Restaurant in Ridgeland at halftime of Ole Miss’ opening game against Boise State. Buy your tickets at any PRVWSD office, or visit BarnettReservoirFoundation.org.

·         Draw archery hunts. Like to hunt deer with a bow and hate waking up early for a long pre-dawn drive to camp? The perfect answer for reservoir area residents would be a weekend of quality hunting experience within a few minutes of your front door. The PRVWSD is currently accepting applications for its second year of archery hunting below the dam (spillway) and in Sections M&N on the north shore of Pelahatchie Bay. All hunts are for four days, from Thursday morning through Sunday evening, with the exception of the final weekend, which is Wednesday to Saturday.  Each permit comes with a limit of one buck — with either a 15-inch inside spread or 18-inch main beam — and two antlerless deer (does). Permit holders can also bring one guest, who can also carry a bow and hunt. The application process began Oct. 1 and will continue through Aug. 14. It costs nothing to apply and applications are available at all PRVWSD offices or online at TheRez.ms.gov.

·         More lands to hunt: Did you know that in addition to the approximately 1,100 acres open in the draw archery hunt, the PRVWSD has about 10,000 more acres open to hunting without permit. It’s true and the 2014-15 Hunting Regulations/Maps are available at any PRVWSD office location or online at TheRez.ms.gov.

·         Resort Status vote Sept. 23: the Rankin County Board of Supervisors has set Sept. 23 as the voting date to consider the referendum for resort area status on the Rankin County properties of the PRVWSD. The Rankin County Community Center next door to the Reservoir Fire Station on Spillway Road will be the only polling station for this special election. Only voters registered in Rankin County who live on PRVWSD property will be allowed to vote.

·         Fishing news: The best fishing reports over the past week have involved jugging — using free-floating devices holding hook, line and bait — for catfish. “And it’s big fish, not just the little guys, that are biting,” said Tony Holeman of nearby Pisgah. “We’ve been filling a 125-quart sea chest with fish in about four hours at night.” Closed areas for jugging on Barnett Reservoir include the main lake, south of a line between the Twin Harbors bridge and Fannin Landing; Pelahatchie Bay, south and/or west of the boat channel to Spillway Road; any marked boating channels north of Mississippi Highway 43 to Ratliff Ferry; and, any waters within 100 yards of a public boat landing or sandbar.
