School Board Endorses Idea of Electing Superintendent

Mississippians, for a while now, have debated the efficacy of electing school board superintendents, as opposed to having the county school board appoint them.  Many of our state's leaders have pushed, in recent times, to move Mississippi away from electing superintendents, believing it gives the school boards better options in choosing qualified leaders.  For whatever reasons, those efforts have failed to change the law.

Despite these efforts, Rankin County School District remained quiet until, ironically, an election year. On Wednesday, March 18, 2015, the Board of Education of the Rankin County School District executed the below Resolution, endorsing the idea of electing superintendents.  Obviously, the surprise and timing of this effort has rankled a number of the electorate.  See Clarion Ledger article here.

Being a product of a stellar north Mississippi school district with an appointed superintendent, I am fully behind this change. Sure, its unfortunate on the timing, but it is a change that can pay off hugely. To be able to get the best possible leader to lead RCSD instead of the most popular local resident that may or may not be as qualified as what's available would put our schools, teachers, and kids in the best position to succeed in life and the workplace. Plus, hiring a well qualified outsider has the potential to eliminate some of this county cronyism that we currently experience.

@10:20am, you must not be familiar with Rankin County and the way the district has been run for the last 16 or so years with Dr. Weathersby at the helm. Dr. Weathersby is not concerned with hiring a "well qualified outsider". His motives are to KEEP cronyism alive and well within the district. He is a cancer to the district and wants nothing more than to keep pulling the strings even after his term is complete. Most folks in the county saw straight through this ploy.

I am very familiar with it having lived in the county for the last 20 years and having dealt with the RCSD over those years. Weathersby may initiated this for some ulterior motive, but he won't be the one hiring a new superintendent. Instead it will be the elected school board making the choice and the hire. Yes, since elected board members will be doing the hiring there is still a chance politics come into play as there are some egos currently sitting on that board. However, the hiring comes from the school board. Not Weathersby.

You are a FOOL to think that Weatherby won't have a say. An absolute fool. Trust me, in one way or another Weatherby's "chosen one" will be the next leader of the RCSD if the legislature goes through with this.

This was done in a very sneaky way for the purpose of insuring the central office candidate is given the job, so that all of Weatherby's relatives can continue in their positions. While appointed superintendents are a good idea, the timing of this is clearly a power grab. Perhaps a fair way to resolve is run this election and have appointment begins at the end of this term.

I guess if that were to happen...this Weathersby picked candidate to get the job... the blame would be on the elected board for voting to approve that candidate. I'm pretty sure the school district could operate with an interim while a search is being conduct for permanent superintendent. Again, it would be the board to make that happen.

This is simply a way for Weathersby and his cronies to get who they want for the job. Period. Good ole boy at its best...

You know if Grumpy is against it, it's probably good for the county!

So when y'all say it is a way for Weathersby to again game the system, you are also lumping the board in as the same too? The Board and Weathersby are awful equally? Please be specific because if it is just limited to Weathersby y'all don't understand at all how this is set up. The Board has to agree to hire that person! Weathersby CANNOT hire the person. I tend to think there will be a healthy debate among the board members as well as PLENTY of opportunity for public input before a hire is made. If the system still fails, then the Rankin County electorate is lazy for not getting involved and for electing dolts to serve on the Board.
I'm ready for Weathersby to go to, but I'm not thrilled by any of the three candidates that have put themselves up for the position. I think we need to look outside of our county for someone better and the chance to appoint a super would allow us to do that.

Oh my gracious! No wonder Weathersby has been able to fleece the county for so long. Weathersby had a 3-2 vote on the board for the resolution. Do you really think that he couldn't pull the same vote? Might I also remind you that FOUR years ago when the idea was brought up Weathersby was 100% against it. Come on folks this is clearly Weathersby trying to save the jobs of HIS CHILDREN, which by the way, are the only children he's concerned with in Rankin County.

@10:13 am No my friend usually is Grumpy is against it it's because it's best for WEATHERSBY. You people are so foolish to not see through all of this MESS! Nepotism, cronyism, unethical leadership, power plays... the list goes on...

If you aren't aware the employees of this district live in perpetual fear of the administration for no reason other than the fact that they know if they go against him in any way they will get the "wrath of Weathersby".

Also I think it's worth noting that one board member doesn't even have children in RCSD she has PULLED them and placed them into PRIVATE SCHOOL. Oh she was also one of the 3 yay votes.

And Grumpy Farmer has relatives who feel they were "wronged" by the current administration thus Grumpy's 'concern'. So how is he any different from what you accuse the superintendent? Hyprocisy at its best.

Grumpy and Weathersby are enemies. Grumpy is going to vote against Weathersby every time. Weathersby could bring a gift of $1 Billion dollars to the district and Grumpy would vote not to accept it. Both need to go...and 2:47, you hit the nail on the head! Hypocrisy at the best.
