News on Lakeland Drive Expansion

Below is the press release for the Lakeland Drive expansion.  The groundbreaking ceremony is Friday at 10:30 a.m., in front of Lakeland Presbyterian Church. Thank goodness the expansion of Old Fannin Road was completed prior this.

Jackson, Miss.—The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced plans for a lane expansion project on Highway 25 (Lakeland Drive) between Highway 475 and Grants Ferry Road in Rankin County.
“Using federal aid, this expansion project will improve the road surface to provide smoother and safer travel for the public,” said Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “To maintain the safety of the public and MDOT crews and contractors, we ask that motorists use caution during the duration of this project.” The expansion project will begin October 8 and is scheduled for completion in fall 2017. The project will add one lane to each side of Lakeland Drive increasing it from four to six lanes. This will relieve traffic congestion and improve the road surface for the traveling public. The first phase of the project will involve creating a detour for the removal and lane replacement of the second northboundbridge over an old abandoned railroad line, and the preparatory work for the lane increase and shoulder widening. While the work is being performed, motorists should expect some delays; however, lane closures are restricted during peak times. “Out of ease and convenience for motorists, the contract limits lane closures during rush hour,” Commissioner Hall said.“Additionally, the contract restricts all construction during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday weekends.”The approximately $36.3 million construction contract was awarded to Superior Asphalt Inc. MDOT will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Lakeland Presbyterian Church, 5212 Lakeland Drive, Flowood, MS.

Lets hope Superior Asphalt have learned from Southern Rock's stellar and ever-so-timely completion of Old Fannin. Can I get an amen?

Between Airport road and Grants Ferry needs it more than between 471 and Grants Ferry

You've not seen morning westbound rush hour traffic backed up a half mile between Grants and 471. This project needs to go out to 471 and initial discussion said that it would.

Hwy 475 is Airport Road. The expansion is between Airport Road and Grant's Ferry. (I read it as 471 the first time too)

This project was initially talked about as being from Airport Rd to 471. Now its Airport Rd to Grants Ferry.

I'm glad they're doing it. I wish they'd take it to 471. Morning backup from Grants heading toward Jackson is about 1/2 mile.

The way I understand the project is it will be done in two phases: The first phase takes it from Airport Road (Highway 475) to Grant's Ferry. The second phase will then extend it out to Highway 471.
