Wirtz Road Bike Trail

I note there is a "groundbreaking" ceremony for the Wirtz Road Bike Trail on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.  This ceremony is taking place at 9:30 a.m. at the Flowood Nature Park next to Winner's Circle Park. I remember hearing rumors two years ago the City of Flowood planned to put a bike trail connecting the Nature Park to the trails on Hugh Ward.

Does anyone know anything more about the trail, i.e., will it be connected to the road a la Old Fannin, or separated like the rest of Flowood's bike trails? Also, does this mean there are no plans to expand Wirtz Road to four lane?

I sure hope it is separated. That road is too curvy and hilly for a connected trail to be very safe.

And the curves by the church north of Manship are barely wide enough for a couple trucks to clear each other.

The least they need to do is repaint the lines on that road. You can't even see the lane lines in those two sharp curves.

Looks like the trail starts at "The Gardens of Manship" and goes all the way to the existing bike trail at the Flowoood Nature Park. Also the bike trail has a strip of grass separating it from the road.

I just went and had a look. Staking and land clearing is underway. It looks to me like it will run on the North and West side of Wirtz from Winner's Circle to Manship Road. It runs on the West side of Manship to the path on Hugh Ward Boulevard. Interestingly, it cuts through the woods to the West of the cemetery on Manship. Otherwise it will run adjacent to to the road and, in some places, not too far from it.

The South end of this path network, when completed, will be at Winner's Circle (the park and the road). The North end will be at Hugh Ward and Avalon Way. Total distance is about 3.65 miles without taking the zig and zag around the cemetery into account.
