Update on Recycling and Church Road

Supervisor Cross just told me that the new recycling bins at the Northshore Fire Station are up and running.  Now, the residents on the Northshore don't have to travel all the way to the Spillway Fire Station to drop off their recyclable goods.

He also gave me an update on the roadwork on Church Road. The County has or will soon replace all the culverts on Church Road. The County will also widen the shoulders of the road and remove some trees.  Eventually, the road will be milled and repaved.

More Convenience Stores on Old Fannin Road

A conditional use variance was granted to a developer for a convenience store on Old Fannin Road near Jack's Crossing.

The Board of Supervisors is not done. Another request for a conditional use permit for a convenience store has been requested for the empty lot on Old Fannin Road where fireworks are sold (across from Spann Road).  The public hearing on this request is October 3, 2016, at 9 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors.

Here is the Facebook page for the new Taste Bistro and Desserts that opened where Cassata's Market and BBQ used to be (next to Fannin Mart). Here is the message from the owner:

Apparently, Taste is already winning awards:

Such a great cause and I'm so thankful for all of the positive comments and votes!!! You don't try our dessert, she'll hunt you down!!!

SWAT Raid in Farmington Station

Monday morning, Farmington Station residents woke up to a police raid on two houses near or on the corner of Ashton Drive and Huntington Drive.  The raid, involving ATF and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics officers, occurred at 5:45 a.m.  According to pictures on WAPT's website, it looked brutal.

WAPT story, with pictures, including the damage to 126 Ashton Drive, here.

According to this Clarion Ledger article, the raid was part of a larger operation. Another house in Gluckstadt was raided, as were properties in Hinds County.  It appears to be a large scale drug ring.

Something Is For Sale

Sorry, bad picture, but if you squint, you can see the auction sign.  The auction sign is on Castlewoods Boulevard near the Blockbuster Video parking lot.  I assumed it was advertising for sale the strip mall; however, an astute commentor pointed out it's actually the property behind Donut Palace that is for auction.  According to the Tax Assessor's records, that parcel is owned by Winn-Dixie Properties, LLC.

The sign reads:

Hilco Real Estate 855-755-2300

 - Timberlake Campground will be getting new lighting soon.

 - The plat for Lost Rabbit Phase B1 was approved.

 - John Burwell of the Main Harbor Development met with the Board and updated them on the progress.  Per the minutes, "the development had experienced some significant interest recently from some impressive parties, but nothing he could divulge at this time."

The Rankin County School District Bond Informational/Listening Tour continues in October.  The Phase I "Listening Tours" are over.  Now, the School District is applying the input from Phase I to the Facility and Usage Study, plus a Demographic Study, to come up with options for the Bond.

How to Register to Vote

This may be my single-most important post of the year.  On November 8, 2016, Rankin Countians will arrive in droves to vote at the polls.  That day, we will elect a President, Congressman, Supreme Court Judge, and Court of Appeals Judge along with school board members and election commissioners.

To qualify to vote, you must:

   1.  Be a U.S. citizen,
   2.  Live at your Mississippi address by October 9, 2016,
   3.  Be at least 18 years old on November 8, 2016,
   4.  Be a non-felon, and
   5.  Not have been adjudicated incompetent by a Court.

You don't have to go to the Circuit Clerk's office to register to vote.  You can do that in the comfort of your own home.  BUT YOU MUST DO IT BEFORE OCTOBER 9, 2016.  Below is the voter registration form.  I downloaded this from the Mississippi Secretary of State's website.  Fill it out and mail it to the following address:

     Rankin County Circuit Clerk
     P O Box 1599
     Brandon, MS 39043-1599

Mail it before October 9, 2016!!

The form can be confusing.  For example, "NVRA" stands for National Voter Registration Act.  An NVRA Agency is a state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities to enable them to register to vote.  That would not apply to someone registering through the mail.

This form can be used to register to vote for the first time, or to denote a change in residence.

9/11 Memorial Run Sunday!

On September 11, 2011 -- on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on America -- Reservoir-area firefighters ran the 11 miles around Pelahatchie Bay in memory of those who lost their lives during the attack. Video of that first run is above.

Over the years, that run evolved into a more community centered activity, with a live band, inflatables, a timed half-marathon, and a lot of pomp and circumstance.  However, the hoopla proved a distraction to the first responders running for their fallen brothers and sisters.

Last year, the run became again what it once was, a simple, touching, tribute to Americans who died saving the lives of other Americans.

Sunday afternoon, the firefighters will quietly begin at Lakeshore Park, some in gear, and they will run around Pelahatchie Bay. The names of the 2,996 people who died that day will line the 11 mile course, along with 3,000 American flags. Salt of the earth Rankin Countians will cheer them on, We won't forget.

Bond Issue Listening Tour

Dr. Sue Townsend has been on a listening tour throughout the County, in anticipation of the upcoming bond issue. Yesterday, she came to Northwest Rankin Attendance Zone.  Tomorrow she will be at Brandon. That "listening tour" is referred to as Phase I.

Phase II will start after a demographic and facility usage study is completed.  Dr. Townsend will again tour the various attendance zones to present the findings of those studies.

Thereafter, in January and February, the RCSD will perform community outreach, to inform everyone of the specifics of the bond.

The bond vote will be March 7, 2017.

Anyone who attended last night's "listening tour" at Northwest Rankin have any thoughts?
